St. Richard Garden Compost
During a lesson of separating and classifying school garbage, my students were surprised by the large amount of food waste they found in the garbage. The landfill in our city is full and our garbage is currently trucked 80 km to another town's landfill. After a visit to the Waste Management Center to learn about recycling, reusing and reducing, they wanted to do something about the food and organic waste being sent to the landfill by our school. A composter for the entire school was suggested and a plan was made by the students to organize a collection schedule and teach the other students of the school about their plan to reduce school organic waste. They discussed the use of their compost as a soil enricher for the school garden they plant and care for.
