This project involves the community in two ways. First of all, families and community members will be encouraged to recycle their paper for us to use to make our paper. Secondly, we would like to invite the two boys and their mother to come to our school to present a workshop on paper. The mother's name is Nathalie Hurdle and her children are going to another school. I met them in a craft fair and already talked to them about our project. They are willing to come to our school to explain and teach our students how to make the paper if we can make the schedules work.

Making Paper

We would like to make paper using used paper. We will recycle paper and turn it into new paper. We will collect used paper here at the school and invite community members, including families to send us their old papers. We would begin by gathering recyclable paper then invite two little boys that have experience in paper making to come to our school to do a workshop on how to make paper. We have found out that there are two school-aged boys in our area that are making recycled paper and, if their schedules permit, can come to conduct a workshop at our school. If the boys are unable to come to our school, there are two teachers that are interested in hosting a workshop on paper making. The participants of the workshop will meet after to write a blurb for our school newsletter to inform the community about recycling and reusing.
Depending on the success of the paper making process, we are considering making bookmarks and/or greeting cards that could be sold and the profits could go towards a charitable organization of the student's choice.

Update (January 22, 2014)

We have bought and are using our new recycling bins. The students in the EVB club have made presentations, about recycling, to the whole school. There is a lot of excitement surrounding the recycling campaign and the whole school is getting involved.

Update (February 19, 2014)

For the past month, our students have been collecting paper in our school (the paper would otherwise be sent for recycling) to see how much paper is actually sent for recycling. Today, the students got together, at lunchtime, to start tearing up the paper into small pieces so we can make our own paper on Friday. We will be using 100% recycled paper, from our school and local community.

Update (March 28, 2014)

We have printed pictures of our paper making workshop and last night, at portfolio night, we presented to parents and community members. We received a lot of positive feedback and the students were excited to see the pictures and tell about the experience. Our next step will be to turn the paper into cards and/or bookmarks!

Thank you Imagineaction!

Update (March 31, 2014)

Here are a few photos of our paper making workshop. I forgot to upload them earlier!

Update (March 31, 2014)

This is a picture of us learning how to make the paper. We were fortunate to have community members able and willing to come into our school to present to us.

This is a photo of us getting our hands wet! We are feeling to texture of the soon to be paper.

Update (March 31, 2014)

This is a photo of some students drying the paper. It was important that we took out as much water as we could, in order for the paper to dry quickly.

Update (June 20, 2014)

Our paper making project has officially came to an end. Over the past several months, the students have been creating bookmarks and greeting cards from the recycled paper we made and on Tuesday evening, the items were sold at our school's Talent Show. We raised $92 and we made a donation to our local SPAD (animal protection society here in Drummondville). The students were excited to see their project come full circle and see the impact of the change that they can make. This project was a huge success and we will like to complete a similar activity next school year. Thank you very much Imagineaction for your support!
