LITERACY IN ACTION:
How Canadian contemporary authors inspire youth

This joint project with the Canada Council for the Arts, the Public Lending Right Commission, the Canadian Commission for UNESCO and the Canadian Teachers’ Federation attempts to put students directly in touch with Canadian authors. From a list of pre-selected, grade-specific, and theme-identified books, Imagineaction will fund the supply of classroom books and classroom conversations with Canadian authors.*

From there, imagine the possibilities for community social action.

This project is aimed to promote Canadian authors and literature in schools, to advance reading skills, to associate the creative process to everyday life and to arouse citizen engagement in the arts and from the arts.

As a way of sharing the pleasure and the importance of reading within class or within the community, the production of a video is an opportunity to get involved in a greater movement of literacy, and to discover Canadian contemporary culture as well as its relevance for social awareness.

The Canadian Teachers’ Federation acknowledges the financial support of the J.W. McConnell Family Foundation, the Canada Council for the Arts and the Canadian Commission for UNESCO in this worthwhile initiative.

Note

  • No funding is provided to the school. You will be provided with a classroom set of the book you selected and a conversation with the author. When possible, the conversation will occur in person, otherwise conversations will occur virtually. CTF non-Members will be invoiced a $50 administrative handling fee.
  • Your project description must include the following outcome:
    • The production of a video as a means of elaborating on the book’s relevance for social awareness.
  • If your project application form is approved, you must update your showcase page, including the uploading of your video production.
  • Upon completion of your project, please share the books with your colleagues so other students may enjoy them.
