I Can Make a Difference

Students will discover the history and purposes behind municipal, provincial, and federal elections. Students will gain an understanding of the importance of voting and the effect voting has on the operation of the provinces and the country. Students will learn about their responsibilities as citizens and the duties of their elected representatives.

Update (March 11, 2013)

My students have enjoyed meeting their MLA and MP. They also enjoyed a wonderful trip to visit the provincial legislature. The students are now completing display boards that explain how laws are made, responsibilities of citizens, as well as responsibilities of the 3 levels of government.

Update (April 4, 2013)

My class thoroughly enjoyed studying about democracy, how our governments work, and their rights and responsibilities as Canadian citizens. We had visits by our MLA and MP, as well as a field trip to the provincial Legislature. With the knowledge and information gained, my students created large display boards and placed them in the lobby of the school for students and parents to look at during parent teacher interviews.
